Kampot City prepares to apply to become a member of UNESCO’s Network of Cities with Creative Gastronomy

Phnom Penh: Mr. Huot Hak, Minister of Tourism, on June 24, 2026, invited to the final consultation workshop on the preparation of Kampot City’s candidacy document to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN).

The above workshop was attended by Flavio Bonetti, Director of UNESCO in Cambodia, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, Mao Thunin, Governor of Kampot Province, and relevant parties in the province, representatives of the Battambang provincial administration, Mondulkiri province, Ratanakiri province, and the private sector.

On that occasion, Minister Huot Hak emphasized that the above workshop is not only a technical consultation forum, but also an important event in demonstrating Cambodia’s shared commitment to promoting cultural values, creativity, and local identity to gain recognition on the international stage.

The Minister also thanked UNESCO in Cambodia, the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, Kampot Provincial Administration, the technical working group of the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, and all relevant parties who collaborated closely in preparing the nomination documents, and praised the citizens, artisans, entrepreneurs, producers, and chefs in Kampot province who contributed to preserving and developing the region’s cultural heritage and food to prominence.

The Minister stated that Kampot province has rich potential in terms of natural resources, beautiful scenery, French colonial architectural heritage, and agro-tourism products that have registered Geographical Indication (GI) marks and are internationally famous, such as Kampot pepper, Kampot salt and salt flowers, Kampot fish sauce, Kampot durian, and fresh seafood, which are all valuable resources for the development of a creative food city.

At the same time, Mr. Huot Hak emphasized that modern tourism is not only focused on sightseeing, but tourists want to get real experiences through culture, food, art, music, etc. Therefore, joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of food will be an important strategy to attract investors, increase competitiveness and promote sustainable development.

The Minister also encouraged and stimulated other capitals and provinces to study, explore Uncover and showcase the hidden cultural, food and creative potential of its localities to prepare for future participation in UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network.
