Phnom Penh: On April 28, 2026, Cambodia celebrated World Intellectual Property Day 2026 under the theme “Intellectual Property and Sport” at the Ministry of Commerce, with the participation of senior leaders of the Royal Government of Cambodia, diplomatic representatives, development partners, and many national and international organizations.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of World Intellectual Property Day, Mr. Hem Vandy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, highlighted the increasingly important role of intellectual property in promoting creativity and innovation in various sectors, including sports.

He said, “Intellectual property is not only a legal principle, but also an important foundation in supporting the sports sector by helping to protect creativity, promote investment, and ensure that sports will continue to benefit society and the world.”

Intellectual property rights play a key role in supporting the ecosystem of the modern sports sector, from live broadcast rights and digital content production to the protection of trademarks, industrial designs and patents, etc.

The Minister added that strengthening these systems is important in promoting enterprises and innovators to compete in both domestic and global markets.

He also recalled that “the rapid growth of the digital economy has brought both new opportunities and challenges. Digital technology has also increased the risk of piracy, counterfeiting and unauthorized use of rights, which requires strengthening law enforcement and raising public awareness.”

Please note that Cambodia has been strengthening its intellectual property system to support innovation and economic development through the digitalization of intellectual property services, as well as strengthening cooperation with domestic and international partners, using the intellectual property system as a tool to support innovation-driven growth.
